George Jones - I'm Not Ready Yet

It was released in August 1980 as album's second single following the monster smash "He Stopped Loving Her Today." Jones' version peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart.

Written by Tom T. Hall. It was originally released by The Blue Boys in 1968, whose version peaked at number 58 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart.

The song was covered by American country music artist George Jones on his 1980 album I Am What I Am. It was released in August 1980 as album’s second single following the monster smash “He Stopped Loving Her Today.” Jones’ version peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart.

On the original 45 record, it was paired with another good song: The B-Side was “Garage Sale Today” from the pen of A. Riley and W. Win.

As Rich Kienzle observes in the liner notes to the 1994 Sony compilation The Essential George Jones: The Spirit of Country, the Hall composition “seemed to also reflect on George’s mortality though Hall’s lyrics weren’t originally conceived that way.”

George Jones – I’m Not Ready Yet Lyrics

I’ve always said someday

I was gonna leave you.

Some April when all the land is wet.

Some spring, summer, fall or maybe winter.

I’ll leave someday but I’m not ready yet.

I know I should of left the day

I knew your love was dyeing.

But I passed up every date

That I ever set.

But I know I’ll leave

When my heart tells me it’s ready.

But I’m still around, but I’m not ready yet.

Yah know I must have left you

a hundred times but you don’t know that.

‘Cause I was afraid you’d laugh

when you found out just how far I’d get.

But you didn’t, and you don’t.

I know you ain’t gonna ever.

And someday I’ll go, but I’m not ready yet.

I know I should of left the day

I knew your love was dyeing.

But I passed up every date

That I ever set.

But I know I’ll leave

When my heart tells me Lord willing

But I’m still around, but I’m not ready yet.

But I’m still around, ‘Cause I’m not ready yet.
